Nine-year-old Hamas hostage believed dead is reunited with her father

Dozens of hostages are recovering after being freed from their captors, after a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas came into effect.

Almost eight weeks of violence came to a halt as the truce began, with Hamas so far releasing 41 hostages in the first two days of the truce.

Among those who were freed by the radical Palestinian group was nine-year-old Emily Hand, who's father thought she was dead.

When Emily was at a sleepover on October 7th, the neighbourhood was bombed and her father Thomas, was told his daughter had died.

Now, Thomas and Emily have been reunited, with their emotional reunion just one of many as families across Israel saw the return of their loved ones.

Also released by Hamas was four-year-old Abigail Edan, an American-Israeli dual citizen who was abducted by Hamas almost eight weeks ago.

US President Joe Biden commented on Abigail's release, saying she has been through "the unthinkable", as the four-year-old saw her mother get killed, before her father was also killed as he tried to shield her from the bombings.

Biden said Abigail is receiving love, care and “the supportive services she needs” and adding he hoped “this is not the end of the temporary truce”.

“What she endured was unthinkable. She has been through a terrible trauma,” he said.

All 41 hostages released by Hamas from captivity in Gaza are stable, according to local medical professionals.

The truce between Israel and Hamas came into effect on Friday morning, marking the end of seven weeks of constant fighting since the bombing of southern Israel on October 7th.

The four-day pause is expected to see the exchange of 150 Palestinian women and children imprisoned in Israeli jails for 50 women and children hostages held by Hamas.

Israeli officials, while adamant that the truce is not an end to the war, have also agreed to pause fighting for an additional day for every further 10 captives freed by Hamas.

Victoria Beckham's birthday snaps squash feud rumour

Victoria Beckham continues to squash feud rumours between her and daughter-in-law Nicola, as she shared intimate snaps from her 49th birthday dinner.

The star celebrated her birthday with a fancy dinner accompanied by her husband, David Beckham, her four children, and her daughter-in-law, Nicola.

“I love you,” she captioned one of her photos tagging Brooklyn and Nicola.

In the picture, Nicola can be seen sitting in the middle of Brooklyn and Harper with her arms around them, fitting right into the Beckham family.

The former Spice Girl also posted a picture showing a lit up birthday cake and Brooklyn and Nicola sitting across from her smiling from ear to ear.

Rumours about the feud had started during Brooklyn and Nicola’s wedding last year, where it was reported that the two women had argued over Nicola’s dress.

In an interview for the Cosmopolitan, Nicola had briefly mentioned the rumours surrounding her wedding.

"I've said this so many times: There's no feud. I don't know. No one ever wants to write the nice things," she said.

"It's really weird, actually, whether it's my life or someone else's life or whatever, when you know the truth and then you read something totally wrong,” she added.

In recent months, it seems that the pair had gotten closer and Victoria’s photos appear to have squashed the rumours once and for all.

Images: Instagram

Take a look for yourself:

The purrfect passenger gives the fright of his nine lives

Some people are braver than others. And the same, apparently, can be said for cats.

Onboard a flight from Canada’s Ontario International Airport to the USA’s JFK, one feline friend turned heads when he was caught prowling down the aisle, thousands of feet in the air.

Columnist Yi Shun Lai was one of the passengers who caught sight of the apparent stowaway, and took to Twitter to share an image of the cat being held by a member of the flight crew, along with the caption “On last night's @JetBlue flight, ONT-JFK: 'Is anyone missing a CAT. A grey-and-white CAT.' Yes I woke up for this.”

As the post blew up across social media, she noted later that the cat had been declared as “HEAVY”, while people in her comments begged for further updates.

“Was the cat's owner found? Did it get trapped in a suitcase? Does a Canadian cat who stowed away need a visa now? I'M INVESTED IN THE OUTCOME HERE!!” declared one.

“And I would have got[ten] away with it, too, if it wasn't for you meddling cabin crew,” joked another.

“That is a giant version of my cat,” shared yet another follower. “How did she get hit by a growth ray and end up on a plane to JFK?”

Meanwhile, one had a suggestion that many seemed to agree with, writing, “we must claim the cat!!! And name him Baggage!”

And Cats with Jobs had something very, very important to share with everyone, telling them to “put him down, he’s the pilot.”

On last night’s @JetBlue flight, ONT-JFK: “Is anyone missing a CAT. He was also, most importantly, home “safe and sound” after his big day out in the sky.

The jokes kept rolling in from there, as well as one who spoke for everyone when he said “somehow, Brian seems like the perfect name for this dude.”

But for others, they just wanted more information on how he was doing, and how exactly he’d managed to get himself out of his carrier like they’d said.

“He’s doing great!” his owner, Alexis, shared with her followers. “My partner & I travel with him in a cat-backpack and the bottom flap isn’t very secure. So Brian … must’ve nudged it open while we were asleep.”

Yi Shun then commented, “at first we wondered if Brian weren't doped up on Benadryl; his expression seemed to be so over-it-all, but then it turns out no, this is Brian all the time.”

And Alexis was all too happy to confirm this, telling everyone that “this is his attitude at all times. Fussy, over it, and refusing to be ignored.”

That’s our big boy Brian! Thank you for all the love, he’s safe & sound but definitely not sorry haha pic.twitter.com/GDg3Bwzv4p

— Alexis (@prof_goddess) March 18, 2023

Images: Twitter

Nine things you don't know about cruises

A favourite mode of voyage for a long time, here are some fun facts you might not have heard of before about cruising.

1.Delighted doggy
Some cruise liners have kennels on board. That’s right — you can ship your pets over the high seas with you.

2.Money bags
A single day visit by a major ship can pump up to $1 million into a port city as thousands of passengers and crew take tours, eat and buy souvenirs.

3. Blind dating
Cruise lines like Azamara, Crystal, Oceania and Silversea, are bringing back the “Love Boat”. Aboard all four of these cruise lines, gentlemen hosts are ready to sweep women cruising solo off their feet during an elegant evening of drinks, dining and dancing. The Gentleman Host program pairs independent female travelers with dashing companions who can take the lead on the Foxtrot and carry on witty, charming conversation.

4. Friends of Bill W.
Alcoholics Anonymous holds meetings on board under the title “Friends of Bill W” meeting. Initially concerned with how other passengers would feel about AA meetings taking place on board, cruise ships announced the meetings as Friends of Bill W.

5. Park view
Some of the most decadent ships are decked out with parks. The Celebrity Solstice, based in Australia during the summer cruise season, has a rooftop deck featuring more than half an acre of live lawn. Fun fact: there is so much lawn that it requires permission from quarantine officials to dock in Australia.

6. Girl power
No woman had captained a major cruise ship until 2007, when Karin Stahre Janson from Sweden took charge of the Monarch of the Seas.

7. Ahoy matey
River cruise ships on busy waterways, like the Nile, often have to tie up abreast of each other, giving guests a sticky beak into other ships as they walk through adjoining ships to reach the dock.

8. Cookie, anyone?
To the delight of many, Princess ships serve cookies and milk at around 3 or 3.30am on the pool deck and in the Piazza.

9. Shoestring tours
If you book your shore tours privately, as opposed to through the cruise line, you can save money. While many cruisers worry that if they book excursions on their own they lose the guarantee that the cruise line offers for returning to the ship on time, some private booking companies actually make the same guarantee too.

Image: Getty Images

A former royal chef has revealed that Queen Elizabeth II has been eating one particular snack ever since she was first served it as a child in the royal nursery.

Darren McGrady worked for the royal family for almost two decades according to The Sun, and has since revealed some of the Queen’s favourite dishes and frequent requests, including one known as Jam Pennies.

McGrady described Jam Pennies as a simple sandwich of “bread and jam with a little butter - usually strawberry jam”, and said the Queen has been eating them every day for 91 years.

“We’d make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens,” he said.

Meanwhile, another former royal chef has said the Queen is partial to a tuna and mayonnaise sandwich, a popular combination among Brits, but with her own twist.

Owen Hodgson told the Telegraph that the monarch prefers hers well-buttered with cucumbers and pepper.

Aside from sandwiches, McGrady has shared more insights into Her Majesty’s dining habits, including her insistence on having afternoon tea no matter where in the world she happens to be.

The chef recalled one particular instance when he flew to Australia and settled aboard a royal yacht at 5am local time, which was five in the afternoon for the Queen - meaning his first task was to make scones.

“In terms of scones - one day plain and one day with raisins folded through,” he said of the Queen’s usual afternoon tea spread.

“Also, tiny pastries like raspberry tartlets and a cut cake, honey and cream sponge, fruit cake, banana bread, or her favourite chocolate biscuit cake.

“It would all be washed down with a delightful steaming hot cup of Earl Grey tea.”

Image: Getty Images

Brooklyn Beckham roasted over bragging about how he makes his money

Brooklyn Beckham has been roasted online after a cringe-worthy video emerged of him bragging how he makes his money.

The son of David and Victoria Beckham featured in a now-viral TikTok with the person filming asking about his career, and how he was able to afford the multi-million dollar red McLaren P1 he was driving.

He has since come under fire for claiming it is his job as a chef that helped him afford the luxury car, rather than growing up in a very rich and famous family.

Daniel Mac, who films himself asking random drivers of pricey vehicles how they pay for them, excitedly grilled Brooklyn, who frequently posts videos of himself cooking various dishes at home.

“Hey, man! What do you do for a living? Your car’s awesome!” asked Mac, who wrote atop the clip that the car costs a whopping $US1.2 million ($A1.7 million).

“Um, I’m a chef,” the smiling 23-year-old replied after realising he recognised the influencer.

“You’re a chef! Really? Are you like the best chef in the world?” Mac asked, prompting Brooklyn to respond, “Tryna be!”

When the TikToker inquired about his “chef name,” the husband of heiress Nicola Peltz simply said, “My name’s Brooklyn.”

As for what advice he’d give to those trying to venture into the culinary world, he encouraged, “Just follow your passion. Whatever makes you happy, just keep doing it!”

As if Mac’s tone weren’t sarcastic enough, the barrage of comments left under his post called out the influence for being completely "tone-deaf".

“‘What do you do for a living?’ ‘My parents are rich so I just kinda vibe,’” one person wrote in reference to Brooklyn’s legendary soccer star dad and pop star-turned-fashion designer mum.

“‘What do you do for a living?’ ‘I was born,’” someone else similarly joked, as another remarked, “Born into a multi-millionaire family and now married a billionaires’ daughter. But he’s a chef!!”

“Not him pretending being a chef got him that car … Brooklyn, please,” someone else quipped, while another pointed out that he’s likely “never worked a shift in a restaurant in his life.”

While the post welcomed a lot of comments about nepotism, other defended Brooklyn saying, "He genuinely seems like a nice guy who isn’t harming anyone, and yet people have to comment that he’s only where he is because of dad?”

Mum outraged after nine-year-old daughter given alcohol at a sleepover

A British mum has taken to the internet to vent her frustrations after her daughter was given alcohol at a sleepover without her permission.

Susan wrote on the Netmums forum about a birthday sleepover her nine-year-old daughter attended for a friend’s 10th birthday. She wrote, "My daughter attended a 10th birthday sleepover with five girls (mix of nine and 10 year old's) from school. I'm very friendly with all the mums. They had a great time and my daughter came back exhausted but in good spirits.

“During the day she told me bits and bobs of what they got up to and it all sounded lovely until she mentioned that she tried a snowball (Advocaat and lemonade) and I'm furious.

"At home she's had the odd sip of bucks fizz (champagne and orange juice) with me and my husband, but the mum has given my child (and other children) some alcohol without my permission. Worst of all my daughter thought it was her fault and got [very] upset."

The post attracted a lot of attention, with most commenters agreeing that Susan was right to be angry, with some even calling it child abuse and urging her to call the police or child protective services. One commenter wrote, "I agree that this was not on at all! At the very least, if she was planning on letting them try the snowball she should have checked with the parents first that it was OK."

Another mum shared her own experience in a similar situation, saying, "I'd also be absolutely livid. I've been there with my 14-year-old daughter. If there's alcohol involved the parents' permission should be obtained. I'd not be letting my child near that house again as trust would be completely shattered."

Others said they couldn’t see the issue as she had given her daughter alcohol in her own home, with one commenter saying, "I think if she is allowed a bucks fizz at home then a little snowball is not really that bad? You need to talk to your daughter about drinking alcohol and what is allowed and what isn't.”

In the UK, it is against the law to give children alcohol at home if they are under the age of five. That means that on private premises like homes, children aged five to 16 are allowed to consume alcohol, although Drinkaware and the Chief Medical Officers advise against it.

Image: hobo_018

New heart attack treatment hailed as landmark discovery

Image: Nine News

A ground-breaking discovery made by Australian doctors in the treatment of heart attacks is, according to researchers, a breakthrough as significant as landing on the moon.

As a result, $8 million dollars has been given as a boost to run a major trial, with heart attack survivor Wayne Cook the first participant in the world to receive the breakthrough treatment.

“I had a pain in both my biceps and across my back,” the 57-year-old, who had a major blockage, said of his heart attack.

“I didn’t think my symptoms were a heart attack but the pain was excruciating.”

The Perth man was able to receive life-saving treatment – a balloon unblocking his artery and a stent placed to hold it open.

Professor Martin Ng from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney said the treatment for heart attacks had not advanced in over 20 years.

One in two treated patients also have blockages downstream, in the micro vessels of their heart, which increase their risk of dying.

"There's a fundamental serious problem that still isn't resolved," he said.

"These vessels are so small so they can't be seen on the X-ray equipment from which we do the angiogram."

Now, a wire with sensors measures blood pressure and flow.

It's used to identify blockages downstream, so patients can then receive a clot-busting drug.

An earlier study, funded by taxpayers, uncovered astonishing results.

"This observation is, for us, like a landing on the moon," Professor Ng said.

This new larger trial will involve more than 500 heart attack patients, who are identified as being higher risk.

Nicole Kidman shares the moment she knew Keith was 'the one'

Nicole Kidman has revealed the sweet moment she knew she was "a goner" for her husband Keith Urban, when he turned up at the door of her New York apartment at 5 am with flowers.

The Aussie actress told Jimmy Fallon about the special moment during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

"He sat on the stoop of my New York apartment,” she said. “I came out, it was 5 am in the morning and it was my birthday, and he had flowers," Kidman recalled of the day back in June 20, 2005.

"And that was it. I was a goner. I'm like, 'Yes I'll marry you'," she added.

Kidman didn’t elaborate if that was the moment Urban proposed to her or just the moment she realised she wanted to marry the country singer.

Celebrating 15 years of marriage

The couple, who first met at G'Day LA in 2005, married on June 25, 2006 in Sydney.

In the interview on The Tonight Show, Fallon congratulated the pair on their recent 15th wedding anniversary in June of this year.

"For a second there, I thought you said 50 years," Kidman laughed, before adding: "Hopefully one day, but 15 years, which is pretty amazing, right?"

Fallon tried to get the actress to divulge how the couple celebrated their relationship milestone but Kidman kept details of the celebration private.

No joint albums coming out soon

It's certain the happy couple won't be marking the milestone by creating an album of duets together because the actress was horrified when Fallon asked if that will ever be on the agenda.

While Kidman has sung in musicals like Moulin Rouge
and Nine as well as a duet with Robbie Williams, she says she's not confident as a performer and would rather "stay in my lane" and leave the music to her hubby.

Kidman previously told People magazine in a 2019 interview it was her 38th birthday when she knew Urban was the one for her.

"I believed by that point he was the love of my life," she said.

"Maybe that's because I am deeply romantic, or I'm an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, 'Oh, okay, here he is,'" she added.

And speaking of their relationship in 2007 with Vanity Fair, the actress described it as the right timing.

"I would probably say that two very lonely people managed to meet at a time when they could open themselves to each other. We were a mixture of frightened and brave," Kidman said.

The couple share two daughters together Sunday Rose, 13, and Faith, 10.

Image: The Tonight Show and Instagram
